Crews make progress on brush fire near Bell Valley in East County

A slow-moving brush fire charred 12 acres in East County Tuesday and briefly forced the closure of state Route 94 between Bell Valley Road and Harris Ranch Road, a fire official said.

The fire was reported around 10:30 a.m. in the Bell Valley area between Portrero and Campo. It was holding at 12 acres and was 20 percent contained by Tuesday afternoon, and fire crews were reportedly making “good progress,” Cal Fire said.

Cal Fire officials sent two air tankers, three helicopters, 10 engines, four water tenders, two bulldozers and four hand crews to battle the blaze.

No structures were reported threatened and no evacuations have been ordered, said Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette.

SR-94 reopened after a brief closure to one-way traffic control, according to Caltrans.
