A motorist was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Saturday night after allegedly striking and killing a man running across a street mid-block in Pacific Beach, police said.
The man who died was running east across Mission Bay Drive, near De Anza Cove Park, when he was hit around 8:55 p.m. He died before he could be taken to a hospital, San Diego police said.
According to police, the victim was running across Mission Bay Drive when a driver in a large pickup heading south in the right-hand lane spotted him and stopped.
The man kept running and was struck in the fast lane by a 2003 Subaru WRX driven by a 23-year-old man who told police he did not see the pedestrian because the pickup was in his way.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Subaru was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. No other information was released.
Anyone with any information regarding the crash was urged to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
