A motorcycle rider was killed and his passenger was critically injured after they slammed into the side of an SUV making an illegal u-turn in Grantville Saturday, San Diego police said.
The crash was reported around 4:15 p.m. on Camino Del Rio North near Ward Road, Officer Jose Perales said in a news release.
Investigators said a 59-year-old man was driving his BMW motorcycle east in the far left lane when a 60-year-old man driving a Subaru SUV in the same direction in the righthand lane tried to make an illegal u-turn across the road’s median, Perales said.
The SUV driver cut in front of the BMW and the motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Perales said the motorcycle driver died at the scene. A 55-year-old woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle was taken to a hospital with a fractured pelvis, broken leg and a collapsed lung. Her injuries are believed to be life threatening, police said.
Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, police said. The crash is under investigation.
