Lemon Festival next month

The 27th annual Lemon Festival in downtown Chula Vista is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug.17. Third Avenue will be filled with all things lemon as part of a celebration of Chula Vista’s agricultural heritage. Highlights include lemon-themed bites and sips, two stages of live music, a lemon cook-off competition, arts and crafts vendors, photo opportunities and the Little Lemons kids’ area in Memorial Park. Golf and high school reunion

The Sweetwater High School Alumni, Friends and SUHI Foundation hold the second Golf and Dinner Reunion Dinner on Aug. 2 at the Chula Vista Golf Course, 4475 Bonita Road. Summer Wine Fest coming up

The fifth annual Uncorked: Del Mar Summer Wine Fest is from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The event features more than 100 wines and bubblies from around the world along with “outside the bottle” options such as seltzers, meads and canned cocktails. There will be live music, food trucks and the horse races. Early admission at 1 p.m. costs $85, including early tasting with a smaller group and pours from select wineries. General admission at 2 p.m. is $70. Both tickets include wine tasting and all-day admission to the track. Republican women’s club meets Aug. 13

The Navajo Canyon Club of Republican Women of California will host a meeting from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Elks Lodge, 1400 E. David Borgo Quartet to perform

The Friends of the Encinitas Library will host the David Borgo Quartet in a free concert from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Saxophonist and composer David Borgo will present selections from his latest album, “Persistence.” The concert also features John Opferkuch on piano, Doug Walker on bass and Richard Sellers on drums. Night on the Lawn benefits foundation

A Night on the Lawn to benefit the Coastal Community Foundation is from 4 to 8 p.m. July 28 at The Farmhouse at Leichtag Commons, the historic Ecke family home at 441 Saxony Road. The concert features Peter Sprague and his band and the Young Lions, a youth jazz ensemble that will open the concert. There will be food vendors. Bring beach chairs and blankets. The concert is in partnership with the Friends of the Encinitas Library. General admission is $100. Animal shelter offers pet loss support

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society has a Pet Loss Support Program with free, one-on-one, 20-minute telephone consultations for people who recently lost pets or are saying goodbye to their pets or have pets suffering from major illnesses. Upcoming sessions are from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 3 and Aug. 17. Inquiries must be made no later than 11 a.m. the day before the session you want. ‘Los Animales: Wildlife Art’ theme of new exhibit

The theme of the Escondido Art Association’s August exhibit is “Los Animales: Wildlife Art.”  Art entries will be accepted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at the EAA Gallery, 121 W. Grand Ave. Artists are encouraged to use use oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography and mixed media. There is a maximum of three pieces per artist per month. Artwork will be judged by Roberta Dyer, who will host a free Live Art Demo at 6:30 p.m. Aug.8 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Community Education Series continues

Senior Service Council seeks volunteers

The Senior Service Council is looking for reception desk volunteers who can spare three hours per week. Since 1972, the council has provided various services, support groups, tech tutoring and health care counseling for seniors in the community. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed. OCEANSIDE

Golf tournament benefits homeless people

Brother Benno’s, a nonprofit providing food, clothing, addiction recovery and other services to the area’s homeless community members, working poor and seniors, will hold its sixth annual charity golf tournament Sept. 18 at Goat Hill Park, 2323 Goat Hill Drive. Professional surfer Kelly Slater will support this year’s event, offering a Kelly Slater Wave Co. Surf Ranch experience for live bidding. Additional live and silent auction items will be offered. Silent auctions will run both in person and online, and are open to the public. The event aims to raise $250,000. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. followed by the 11 a.m. shotgun start. Tournament registration is open and runs through Aug. 18. Individual golfer registration is $225; foursomes, $900; including shared golf cart, greens fee, boxed lunch, snacks and refreshments, buffet dinner and swag bag. Diaper drive for military families

The veterans group at Ocean Hills Country Club is holding a diaper drive for families at Camp Pendleton through Aug. 17 as part of the Armed Services YMCA Camp Pendleton’s diaper drive. Chamber holds Emerging Issues Forum

Parkinson’s support group meets Aug. 5

The Inland North County Parkinson’s Support Group for people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners meets from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 5 at San Rafael Church, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive, in the Parish Hall. Drive-thru grocery collection

Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church sponsors a drive-thru nonperishable grocery collection from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at 17010 Pomerado Road. The drive will benefit families served by New Day Urban Ministries, a Presbyterian Mission Outreach program in San Diego that provides groceries, toiletries, clothing, counseling and assistance with legal documents. POINT LOMA: Rotary Club donates $60,000 to the Moores Cancer CenterPoint Loma Rotary Club donated $60,000 to the Moores Cancer Center from its recent Ride The Point fundraiser. The event, which included six-mile, 25-mile and 62-mile bicycle rides, drew hundreds of participants locally and from around the world and raised more than $60,000. The Club donated over $400,000 to the Moores Cancer Center since the program began in 2013 in memory of former Point Loma Rotary Club president Jim Krause who died of pancreatic cancer in 2012. Nearly 450 volunteers help run the program spearheaded by Point Loma Rotarian Rich Stakelum. Pictured are Point Loma Rotarians.

Jazz concert features Wayne Shorter tribute

The Chase Morrin Trio will host a free Wayne Shorter tribute concert celebrating jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter at 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at Tio Leo’s Mexican Restaurant, 5302 Napa St. Morrin, who grew up in San Diego, is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Harvard. Latin American Festival in Old Town

The Latin American Festival and Mata Ortiz Pottery Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 2-3 and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at Bazaar del Mundo Shops, 4133 Taylor St., in Old Town. Artists from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador and other Latin American countries will showcase Mexican folk art, traditional clothing and textiles and Mata Ortiz pottery. There will be live music and artist demonstrations of woodcarving, painting and weaving. First Friday Art Walk on Aug. 2

The First Friday Art Walk, a La Jolla Village event, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at LIK Fine Art La Jolla, 1205 Prospect St. The event highlights more than two dozen galleries along with emerging artist pop-ups. Attendees can stroll through galleries and view artwork and enjoy sips and snacks. There is free admission and an all-day parking pass, along with an advance copy of this month’s Art Walk map. Family Movie Night fundraiser

The Coggan Aquatic Complex will become a “Dive-In movie theater” starting at 5 p.m. Aug. 3 at 800 Nautilus St., La Jolla. Art show at Liberty Station

ArtWalk Liberty Station is free to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 3 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 4 at Ingram Plaza, Arts District Liberty Station, 2820 Roosevelt Road. The outdoor show celebrates artists from both sides of the border and features the work of more than 150 artists from across several states and Mexico. Artwork ranges from paintings, photography, glass and ceramic to jewelry and sculpture. The show features a Friday evening preview party from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 with live music and a chance to get first pick of the artwork. Parking is free at Liberty Station. Free music education events at Conrad

The La Jolla Music Society will offer 50 free Learning and Engagement activities through Aug. 24 as part of the SummerFest 2024 at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, 7600 Fay Ave., La Jolla. Activities include open rehearsals, artist lounges, encounters, coaching workshops and musical preludes that are all open to the public. The theme is “Inside Stories,” and the festival will include 21 performances and 50 free education activities over four weeks. All American Car Show at Embarcadero

The All American Car Show with American cars, imports, classics and new models is from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Embarcadero Marina Park North, 400 Kettner Blvd. The event is presented by the Mopar Club San Diego. Proceeds are donated to a designated charity or charities serving San Diego’s military community, including active-duty service members, reservists, veterans and families. Recreation area opens at Waterfront Park

A new recreation area opened recently in the northeast corner of Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway. The area includes two pickleball courts, a basketball court, five fitness stations and table tennis along with a fenced off-leash dog area with agility equipment, benches and drinking fountains. The recreation area will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Equipment checkout is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the summer and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the year. Visit sdparks.org.

Free gym time for gymnastics

San Diego Gymnastics hosts a free Open Gym program to celebrate the opening week of the Paris Olympics at all six countywide locations in Point Loma, Grossmont, Otay Ranch Town Center, La Costa, Mission Valley and Rancho Bernardo. Kids can come during designated open gym times from July 29 to Aug. 3 to test their gymnastics skills and exercise. Students must preregister in advance at sdgymnastics.com.

Olympics pub crawl to benefit nonprofit

Home of Guiding Hands, a nonprofit that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosts an Olympics-themed pub crawl Aug. 10 in North Park. The crawl will include three pubs, starting at North Park Beer Co., 3038 University Ave. Participants will follow the torch bearers to The Original 40 Brewing Co. and Mike Hess Brewing. Attendees are encouraged to sport Olympics attire for a chance to win a gold, silver or bronze medal prize. Proceeds benefit Home of Guiding Hands. Tickets start at $65 per person and include a free drink at each location, food at two locations, a pub crawl pint glass, and a bag filled with pub crawl essentials. Enrollment opens for conservancy program

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy is accepting enrollment for its 2024-25 season of Exploring Our Sense of Place, a series of seven guided hikes exploring the watershed’s natural history. The hikes explore areas that are not accessible to the public and are led by experts in the fields of wildlife, geology, Native Americans, birds, native plants and the ecology of wetlands. Fans collected for seniors in need

Meals on Wheels San Diego County is collecting new fans through July 31 to help local seniors enrolled in its meal program as they cope with high temperatures, often without air conditioning. Community members can drop off new fan donations at any Meals on Wheels San Diego County’s service centers, including 930 Boardwalk St., in San Marcos; 2254 San Diego Ave., in San Diego; 131 Chambers St., in El Cajon; and 270 F St., in Chula Vista. Forums collecting community feedback

The nonprofit San Diego Workforce Partnership hosts a series of Community Feedback Forums from Aug. 1-28 across San Diego County to collect insights from the public for the Strategic Vision 2030 Plan. The forums will help identify the needs of local communities. The nonprofit funds programs, puts initiatives into action and brings together key players from county and city governments, and economic, educational and workforce sectors across the San Diego region. Stuff the Bus school supplies drive

The San Diego County Credit Union’s 10th annual Stuff the Bus campaign to raise money for back-to-school supplies for local homeless kids is under way. The campaign is in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia radio stations to support Live Well San Diego. The community can donate at Jersey Mike’s locations in San Diego County, SDCCU branches or online at sdccu.com/donate through July 31.

Additional adoption hours at Humane Society

The San Diego Humane Society is open an additional two hours for adoptions on Thursday and Friday evenings through Oct. 25 as part of a promotion to help more pets find homes during the summer. Walk-in adoptions are Tuesdays through Sundays at its campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside and San Diego. Coast to Crest Challenge under way

The Coast to Crest Challenge starts its eighth year this month for hikers to sample San Dieguito River Park’s trail network by finishing a series of five hikes, organized by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy.  The deadline to complete this year’s series is June 30, 2025. Visit sdrvc.org.

Kids in the Garden class set for Aug. 10

A Kids in the Garden class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 10 at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, 1270 Vale Terrace Drive. The topic is “Water All Around Us,” about how the community uses water and how residents can save water. Highlights include making bubbles, ice, floating boats, watercolors, mud and origami hearts. Meet up with local sheriff’s team

Community members can meet local Sheriff’s Department members and receive public safety resources from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Vista Station at the Vista Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive. The event is part of National Night Out, an annual event that fosters law enforcement-community partnership and neighborhood camaraderie. Sheriff’s stations and substations nationwide hold the family-friendly event to take a stand against crime. Crime prevention specialists will share tips on how to keep safe. Attendees can also get to know members of the sheriff’s specialized and volunteer units such as Bomb/Arson, K-9 Unit and Search and Rescue. Call (760) 940-4352.

Two-day Obon Festival coming up at temple

The Obon Festival is from 2 to 8 p.m. July 27-28 at the Vista Buddhist Temple, 150 Cedar Road. Highlights include Bon Odori dancing, Taiko drumming, and Japanese foods ranging from manju, chirashi and Japanese curry to somen salad, taikoyaki and mochi ice cream along with discussions about Buddhism, Japanese cultural activities, and local produce, plants and marketplace. Include the name of the group, date and time of event, address, cost and contact information for readers within the email text. Event listings should be submitted about two weeks in advance. Photos should be sent as JPEGs. Include the names of those in the photos from left to right along with the photo credit and permission from the photographer to use the photo in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
