19-year-old man killed in Vista shooting ID’d

A 19-year-old man who died after he and three other people were shot over the weekend in Vista was identified Tuesday as a San Marcos resident.

Antonio Junior Calderon Mendiola died after he and a group of gunshot victims used a cellphone to call 911 around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday from a not-yet-determined location near Civic Center Drive, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Krugh said.

Soon after that, Mendiola showed up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with three other wounded teens and a fifth person, Krugh said.

Mendiola died at the hospital. According to Krugh, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man remain in critical condition as of Tuesday. The fourth victim, a 16-year-old boy, remained hospitalized and was stable.

Krugh said homicide detectives are working to locate the exact crime scene and determine the circumstances around the shooting.
